A waterproofing membrane is only as effective as the surface it’s applied to. Waterproofing expert Bodo Hoffmann of Master Crafts Men explains what you need for an effective waterproofing membrane:
A sound, dense screed.
The correct fall or gradient to allow for water run off.
Adequate drainage.
The Problem:
This balcony was not watertight and the owner reported leaks and damage to the structures on the floors below.
The Solution:
Master Craftsmen chopped away existing old ceramic tiles down to the concrete below.
The exposed concrete was treated with a cementitious waterproof slurry.
The surface was then rescreeded to create an effective fall, allowing for correct surrounding turn ups. This was to ensure that water could not flow under any doors leading off the balcony.
Finally, two layers of heat-bonded membrane as well as the turn ups are dressed into the wall surfaces above.
